Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area manages over 170,000 acres of forests, wetlands, and open lands on a peninsula between Kentucky and Barkley lakes in Western Kentucky and Tennessee. The family-friendly recreation area offers one of the largest blocks of undeveloped forest in the eastern United States. In part of the recreation area, the Elk & Bison Prairie in offers a native grassland habitat common in Kentucky more than a century ago. Elk and bison roam free within a 700-acre enclosure. In addition, numerous other wildlife species thrive in the prairie including wild turkeys, a variety of birds, small game, butterflies, and prairie mammals.

The USDA Forest Service Land Between the Lakes engineering team and the maintenance contractor, Tipton-FSI, needed to replace a series of small undersized pipes and culverts quickly. It was imperative to be able to keep road closures to a minimum and to have the Elk and Bison Prairie open before the busy visitor season.

Contech proposed a series of six Aluminum Box Culverts (ALBCs) with full aluminum inverts with headwalls and wingwalls and was able to assist in size selection during the design process. Two of the ALBC structures were for the Elk and Bison Prairie and four ALBC structures for Bethlehem Cemetery Road. The USDA Forest Service team realized that the ALBC solution could be assembled on-site in-house and save considerable time and money versus traditional bridge construction in both areas.

During the Spring of 2000, the ALBC shells were assembled in a nearby field to allow the contractor flexibility and speed of construction. The culverts were then lifted into place to allow for minimal road closure time. The projects were funded with Emergency Relief Owned Roads (ERFO) dollars.

Installation was completed quickly and was a great success. The USDA Forest Service along with the contractor were pleased with the final product. “Our Contech representative’s knowledge of products has led to us completing some outstanding projects. Product deliveries have been quick and on site assembly coordination a breeze ensuring that we complete projects from the planning phase to completion in a quick and efficient manner.”
