Technical Description:
A 35 ft timber bridge located on Kluttz Road/SR-2435 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, was deteriorating and in need of replacement. The weight restriction on the bridge had also been lowered over the years, rendering it almost useless and hindering traffic volumes for the roadway.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) needed a product that would provide a fast installation in order to minimize road closure time and have a minimal affect on the community.
Aluminum Structural Plate was chosen for the bridge replacment project because it was a fast, easy, low-cost installation product with proven durability. Aluminum Structural Plate is light weight, adding to the ease of installation compared to other structures. It weighs 1/50 as much as reinforced concrete pipe, reducing assembly and equipment costs and allowing for easy handling of long preassembled structures.
NCDOT Division 10 Bridge Maintenance installed twin 58.5 ft long Aluminum Structural Plate pipe arches, measuring 12 ft-3 in x 7ft-3-in. The NCDOT was happy with the fast installation of the replacement culverts.
