The Jaycee Community Building, located in Huntsville, Alabama, is a 12,000 sq. ft. facility that is utilized by the surrounding community for tradeshows, fundraisers, reunions and many other social gatherings. Adjacent to the property was an unsightly open drainage ditch. The open channel was both unattractive and dangerous, and the City of Huntsville determined that a channel enclosure was needed in order to address those concerns. They outlined a proposal for the enclosure of the ditch which would address the safety issues as well as provide a beautification to the surrounding area, including the Jaycee Community Building.
Having assessed the project requirements, the City reviewed several options and ultimately selected an Aluminized Type 2 (ALT2) HEL-COR® solution. The HEL-COR drainage system was quickly provided to the City by ADCO Pipe & Supply, LLC – a local resource for pipe and drainage solutions. ALT2 HEL-COR® manufactured by Contech Engineered Solutions LLC was chosen for the drainage channel because it met all the project requirements. ALT2 HEL-COR is fabricated from steel that has been hot dipped in commercially pure aluminum, offering 75 years or more of maintenance free service life for the base. Compared to reinforced concrete pipe (RCP), it is light weight and has a smaller outside diameter, allowing for a simple – and economical – installation. HEL-COR also provided the structural strength required of the project. The City of Huntsville installed 2,750 LF of 96-inch diameter, 14 gage HEL-COR pipe, which included four tees and six elbows, over the course of two months with a track hoe, forklift, frontend loader and a few dump trucks. The City was very happy with the outcome. The fully enclosed storm drain was installed and then landscaped.
