This INDOT Toll Road District project involved the total replacement of several miles of east and westbound lanes and the total reconstruction of numerous bridges within the project limits. Contech Construction Products Inc. provided technical support to Ken Herceg and Associates throughout the design and construction of a CON/SPAN® bridge replacement project at the Indiana Toll Road, just east of Chicago.

Three lanes of Toll Road traffic were required to be kept open at all times during construction. In addition, one lane of the new eastbound bridge structure had to be constructed before the old structure could be demolished. The end bent CON/SPAN® tunnel and MSE walls were constructed to support the westbound travel lane. After the new lane opened, the old structure was demolished and the remainder of the CON/SPAN® tunnel was set and backfilled. The foundation and cast in place headwalls were designed to hold the fill needed for the new lane.

“Some of the key elements that went into this are not extremely visible...but they were critical in making this puzzle come together” said Jerry Frost of Ken Herceg and Associates. “What we needed was an agile and flexible solution and that is what CON/SPAN® gave us”
