Golden 1 Center is an indoor arena, located in downtown Sacramento, California. The arena is the home of the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association, hosts concerts, conventions, and other sporting and entertainment events. It sits partially on the site of the former Downtown Plaza shopping center. The publicly-owned arena is part of a business and entertainment district called Downtown Commons (DoCo), which includes a $250 million 16-story mixed-use tower.

Stormwater treatment was needed for over 1 acre of impervious rooftop in addition to the sidewalk and common areas. There was no space available for a land-based solution, and all walkways needed to remain clear, making the already challenging infill redevelopment project even that more challenging.

The StormFilter was selected because of its ability to meet the stringent local treatment control standards without taking away from the limited available land space. Contech provided numerous StormFilter design iterations and submittals to assist the engineers through the challenging and changing design of the arena.

The Sacramento Stormwater Quality Partnership has the most robust and comprehensive testing and evaluation protocol on the west coast for proprietary stormwater treatment controls.  The protocol requires testing and evaluation of a broad range of pollutants to stringent effluent requirements on two separate projects of differing land use.  The StormFilter is only one of 3 proprietary treatment controls (with one of the others being Contech's Filterra Bioretention System) that have been able to meet the protocol since its inception in 1999.

A total of six StormFilters were installed, with three being vault configurations and three being manhole configurations. The StormFilter systems were retrofitted into the existing storm drain system, and installation took place in the early morning hours to minimize any disruption to the downtown traffic and commute.  Delivery and installation went smoothly with limited interruption to downtown activities.
