In the commercial area of Glennallen, Alaska, improving safety and enhancing travel and recreational opportunities for pedestrians and bicyclists was a primary concern for the Alaska Department of Transportation (AK DOT). The area is heavily used by tourists and local residents, especially children, on trips to the stores, schools and library. The existing roadway surface along Glenn Highway near mile marker 173 was beyond its useful life and in need of rehabilitation. In order to provide a safe, smooth driving surface and reduce maintenance costs, the project required the replacement of several existing culverts that ran under the roadway as well as resurfacing and replacement of the road above.

After receiving several bids, AK DOT selected a proposal provided by Granite Construction which included Contech Engineered Solutions’ MULTI-PLATE® structural plate to replace the existing twin-culverts that ran 100 linear feet under the road and another round pipe culvert. They also utilized Contech’s galvanized HEL- COR® corrugated metal pipe (CMP) to replace several nearby storm drains along the project’s seventeen mile stretch of highway. Not only was this solution more cost-effective, but Contech’s nearby manufacturing facility, located in Anchorage, Alaska, provided the convenience of supplying a pre-assembled round pipe for the third 96-in. diameter culvert. This third structure arrived to the site in three main sections that were quickly assembled and set into place.

The contractor, Granite Construction Company, assembled the two larger plate structures on-site which were backfilled for a total replacement. The entire project took only a few months and was completely finished by the end of the summer.

“The timely delivery of the material and continued support from Contech helped in making the installation of the MULTI-PLATE pipe a success for us on the Glennallen project, “ stated Granite’s Senior Project Manager, Don Sawyer. “The installation of the plates went together easier then I had thought they would. Contech was always available for replacement of any components and additional material that was needed. We had some damaged plates after they were installed, and Contech had them manufactured and delivered in a time frame that did not delay the paving over the pipe location. I look forward to working with the Alaska team from Contech on more projects in Alaska”
