Over the course of several years, a new residential development was built in Lawrence, Kansas. This innovative neighborhood, entitled Fairfield Farms, was designed with a mix of traditional and contemporary designs that included both single family homes and townhouses. With the development of this new residential area, a storm sewer system was needed to accommodate the anticipated sheet flow due to the increased impervious surfaces above from the new roadways and driveways included in the design.
The project engineers looked at several options but ultimately selected an aluminized type 2 (ALT2) ULTRA FLO® storm sewer system manufactured by Contech Engineered Solutions. They selected ULTRA FLO due to its superior structural capacity while the ALT2 coating provided the desired service life. ULTRA FLO®, a pipe with a smooth interior, is the material of choice for storm sewer applications and a lower cost alternative to reinforced concrete pipe. The smooth interior improves hydraulic capacity (Manning’s “n” = 0.012, equal to concrete pipe) while the exterior box ribs provided structural strength to meet the required project design.
