A roadway through Camp Lejeune’s Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Course (JIEDDC) was old and in need of widening to route through a wet, swampy area.
The original plan called for steel sheeting and culvert extensions but Pomona Pipe Products worked with the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps and the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) to Value Engineer a design. They decided to completely replace the structure utilizing Corrugated Aluminum Pipe (CAP) with Aluminum Structural Plate (ALSP) headwalls.
Elite Construction and Grading installed 28-ft. of 60-in. diameter, 12 gauge Corrugated Aluminum Pipe from Contech Construction Products Inc. with ALSP inlet and outlet headwalls measuring 99 feet long. They also installed twin 28-ft. 36-in. diameter, 12 gauge Aluminum structures with 76-ft. inlet and outlet headwalls.
Corrugated Aluminum Pipe was chosen as the culvert solution because it provided improved hydraulic performance, asthetics and a lower cost than the original plan.
Tensar TriAx TX 160 geogrid was utilized under the stone bedding on the roadway to improve the subgrade as well as above the Aluminum pipe due to the low cover on the unpaved roadway.
“We were very pleased with the services provided by Contech and Pomona to bring this project to a successful conclusion” said Bill Green, Project Manager with Elite Construction and Grading.
