Located in Carrboro, Ballentine is a residential development consisting of new single-family houses and townhomes constructed by M/I Homes of Raleigh, LLC. The suburban community boasts beautiful walking trails, open space and playgrounds. All homes are GHBT Certified “Green,” 100% ENERGY STAR® Certified and come with a 30-Year Transferable Structural Warranty.
Dividing the property into three main parts were several jurisdictional stream channels and wetlands. A vehicular bridge was needed to cross the existing stream/wetlands without disturbing it. As a solution, a 28’ x 6’ CON/SPAN® B-Series Bridge System, 66’ in length, was selected. When compared with other options, the three-sided structure was the best solution for its quick installation, cost savings and inherent ability to avoid impacting the stream/wetlands. In addition, The John R. McAdams Company, Inc. (JRMC), the engineer on the project, had a long trusted relationship with Contech Engineered Solutions and utilized the CON/SPAN product on many other projects.
A 25’ x 5.5’ Continental® Truss Bridge was installed on the site to provide pedestrians access over a stream/wetlands area. Also utilized to provide water quality treatment for a portion of the development’s stormwater runoff was a Vortsentry® 70 unit. VortSentry is a compact, below grade stormwater treatment system that employs helical flow technology to enhance gravitational separation of floating and settling pollutants from stormwater flows.
“The CON/SPAN was selected due to the extremely challenging site, design and planning considerations,” stated Jeremy Finch, P.E., Project Manager with JRMC. “The end result was an aesthetically pleasing solution for the community that also met local, state and federal regulations in a cost and time efficient fashion.”
