The 12,740-acre Wasatch Peaks Ranch offers private skiing in the winter and golfing in the summer. Located 35 minutes from Salt Lake City, Utah and situated in the foothills below the Wasatch Mountain range in Morgan County, the alpine terrain receives 400 inches of snow annually and boasts one of the longest heli-ski runs in the United States. The surrounding area is mostly farmlands and ranches, typical of a rural setting.

Developing this site with steep slopes, numerous creek crossings and undulating landscape required a variety of bridge systems. The initial bridge was part of the main road and provided access to the rest of the development. After exploring several of Contech Engineered Solutions' bridge options, the engineers at Kimley-Horn selected a 42' x 23' BEBO® Bridge Concrete Arch System, 48' in length, as the best solution. The visual appeal of the arch, along with the benefits of a prefabricated system made BEBO the favored approach. Compared to other arch systems, the BEBO required fewer piles to support the foundation and the precast structure was installed in just one day using two cranes.

Once the initial bridge was installed, Phase 1 of the project shifted into high gear and three additional crossings were needed. In each of these cases, a BridgeCor® Structural Plate buried bridge offered an attractive choice for its cost savings. Ranging in size from 36'-3" x 11'-7" to 42'-11" x 19'-7", the structural plate arch system was easily modified to account for varying site conditions. Standard spread footings were used for all three crossings. An aggressive construction schedule meant lead times were a hot topic. In the end, the bridges were manufactured and delivered on time and within budget.

Phase 2 of the project is currently underway. Four additional buried arch bridges have been planned as well as 12 steel girder bridges at the golf course. Fortunately, Contech's portfolio includes rolled girder pedestrian bridges and, in this case, they will be customized with timber curbing and scuppers to meet the aesthetics desired at the golf course.

Contech's BEBO and BridgeCor structures provided cost-effective, aesthetic bridge solutions at Wasatch Peaks Ranch. Whitaker Construction has done a tremendous job of not only assembling the bridges and the associated walls, but also building new roads, shaping the golf course and managing a complex construction site. The owners, engineers and contractors have all contributed to the success of this project.

“Contech was responsive and collaborative with the design team from the early phases of structure type selection through final design and construction," concluded Zac Taylor, PE with Kimley-Horn. "They helped us evaluate and develop several alternatives and cost estimates to make the right decision for our client."
