Established in 1875, Vesper Country Club is a private, member-owned club located near the Merrimack River in northern Massachusetts. Vesper is "committed to providing a fun and inclusive country club experience for all members, families and their guests." Its amenities include a Donald Ross designed championship golf course, pool, tennis courts and dining facilities. According to the United States Golf Association, Vesper is the oldest private club in New England and the fifth oldest in the country.
With much of the club's holes and amenities located across Merrimack River on Tyngs Island, it was imperative that the deteriorating bridge originally constructed in 1937 and repaired in 2009 be replaced as quickly as possible. For the last two years, delivery trucks were no longer allowed to cross the bridge due to weight limits.
“If you have no bridge, then you have no club,” stated Bob Pescatore, Vesper's General Manager/COO.
After considering the alternatives, The Engineering Corporation (TEC), the project's engineer, decided to use a 110' span x 19'-6" wide Colonial Flat-style Steadfast® Vehicular Truss Bridge for its quick installation and ability to be assembled off-site. Additionally, precast concrete decking was selected to further expedite the installation.
The most challenging portion of the install was the inclusion of a gas line running along the bridge. The bridge was designed with additional width in order to accommodate the pipe. The structure installation went smoothly and in order to avoid any issues, the gas line was cut, capped and replaced with propane during the construction period.
In the end, the Steadfast was a great solution for the site, and the parties involved were pleased with the outcome.
“From beginning to end, Contech Engineered Solutions provided Kodiak with exceptional design, fabrication, delivery and installation assistance," concluded Chris Barr, owner of Kodiak. "With this bridge being the only access for vehicular traffic to the club house, the schedule for installing the bridge was extremely important. Contech delivered the bridge and all the components ahead of schedule allowing for a seamless installation and a bridge opening on schedule.”
