A 14,128-sf site was developed for the Fremont Area Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Headquarters. The site includes a large building for office space, maintenance space, and equipment storage. It also includes a fuel island facility, equipment storage, a 6,000 sf chemical storage building (sodium chloride road salt), and a 10,000-gallon underground brine storage tank.

The site needed a large-diameter underground detention facility to fit within a tight footprint. The engineer needed to specify a pipe material that would not corrode from the road salt stored on site. The engineer selected a 96” diameter DuroMaxx detention system to provide 43,108 cf of storage.

DuroMaxx steel-reinforced polyethylene (SRPE) provides the lightweight durability of traditional HDPE with the added structural strength of steel, making it the perfect choice for deep burial and corrosive applications.

The detention system consisted of 6 x 146 LF runs of 96” DuroMaxx. Each run had a 36” access riser on each end for inspection, maintenance, and system access. A 30” manifold was used on each end to connect the pipes.

The system was installed with temporary steel connection bands to hold the sticks of pipe together. Later PlasticWerks welded the joints together, making a permanent, watertight system.
