Sunday River Resort first began in 1958 when a group of skiers climbed Locke Mountain and cut the first trails down through the Maine woods. The resort is now the second largest ski resort in Maine, encompassing 870 acres and owned by Boyne USA, the third largest ski operator in the nation. It includes eight interconnected mountains, 135 trails, 2,340 vertical feet, and 15 lifts. During the recent addition of a luxury home development this tunnel was included in the road construction to maintain a trail back to existing condos below this new development.
A 34’ span x 17’ rise BridgeCor® Structural Plate structure was selected as the best option to meet the clearance requirements of the modern snow groomers, speed of fabrication, delivery and assembly.
According to Joe Alosio, engineering and permitting manager for the resort, “Sunday River has partnered with Contech Engineered Solutions on several bridge and culvert type structures over the past 20 years with great success, including a keyhole slot MULTI-PLATE® under extremely deep fills on the Jordan Bowl access road.”
The BridgeCor structure was placed on 5’ x 3’ precast EXPRESS® Foundations, 69’ in length. The precast EXPRESS foundation system blended the speed of precast with the economy of cast-in-place, while further expediting the speed of the overall installation.
Keystone Compac® MSE walls, a concrete masonry product with geogrid, were utilized for both headwalls for its aesthetic appearance and ease of installation by simple cutting of blocks to fit tightly around the arch.
“The precast EXPRESS footings in conjunction with Contech’s highly experienced assembly crew resulted in a quick and seamless installation during the short construction season of this design-supply grade crossing,” concluded Craig Babbage, Project Manager for Cross Excavation. "In addition, routine on-site assistance by their sales engineer was conducted throughout the entire concept, design, construction and shape monitoring processes."
