Technical Description:
A triple-cell 48-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) culvert crossing under McIntyre Road at the Solterra development near Green Mountain, Colorado required rehabilitation due to cracking and structural compromise from excessive cover and dead load. The RCP triple-barrel culvert was buried approximately 25’-30’ deep, so an open-cut and replace was not feasible. Contech was able to provide a cost-effective segmental slipline solution for the city using an aluminized type 2 (ALT2) ULTRA FLO® reline solution, which was easily pushed through the approximate 400’ culvert barrel length.
The contractor was able to utilize multiple diameters to accommodate the various degrees of failure within the culvert barrels and rehabilitate the entire culvert without disruption to the traffic on McIntyre Road. The low profile of ULTRA FLO, compared to other pipe materials, enabled the maximum waterway area to be retained in the culvert. Additionally, the flexibility in pipe length and skid/grout port selection gave the contractor many options on the best approach to reline the failing host pipe.
Local manufacture of pipe utilizing 100% American sourced and partially recycled steel reduced the overall carbon footprint of the material compared with HDPE or PVC, while providing a industry standard 75+ year service life for the fully rehabilitated culvert.
