Technical Description:
In the summer of 2004, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recognized the need for ditch restoration along the bluff on the downstream side of Rough River Dam. The project required replacing a pre-existing poured concrete ditch, which had been seriously undermined by water runoff, from the face of the dam and flows brought on by drainage. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers required a permanent solution capable of articulation which would account for the length of the ditch and significant flows down its slope.
ArmorFlex Class 50S articulating concrete block mats were designed and installed over a newly prepared surface and anchored at four foot centers left and right of each mat. A total of 5,100 SF of cabled mats were installed in place of the failed concrete/riprap ditch in seven working days. This included excavation and removal of the former ditch materials. Four laborers and two pieces of heavy equipment were used to clear and make ready the ArmorFlex mats.
Crushed stone was used to backfill the units and soils were seeded left and right of the ditch to promote vegetation. The Corps was very pleased with the outcome of the installation and began reviewing other sites within the district for similar applications.
