Sailing from Miami, Florida for over fifty years, Norwegian Cruise Line recently constructed a 166,500 square foot new terminal. It accommodates ships of up to 5,000 passengers and "features new technology to support faster and more efficient embarkation and disembarkation processes, as well as expedited security screening and luggage check-in." The new terminal will meet LEED Silver standards to optimize energy performance, indoor air quality, and water efficiencies while maximizing the use of local materials and resources. Inspired by a nautilus, the terminal was designed with a spiraled and multi-level facade and ocean views.

“We believe the process yielded what will be the most iconic port facility building around the world,” said Frank del Rio, chairman of CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCL). “It won't just be a place that we want to rush you through to get you to the ship, but it will be truly an experience... your cruise begins when you arrive at our new facility.”

In order to provide access from the new terminal to an existing building, a pedestrian bridge was needed. NCL had a tight budget and schedule for the project. The building had already been through three separate estimates and during the final guaranteed maximum price estimate, the joint venture was tasked with value engineering $25+ million from the budget. Switching from a structural steel bridge to a pre-engineered bridge saved the project dollars and more importantly, much needed time.

In the end, a
109-'11" span x 14'-5" wide custom Gateway-style Continental® Pedestrian Truss from Contech Engineered Solutions was selected as the best solution to provide pedestrians with safe passage from one building to the other.

"The architect at Bernello Ajamil and Partners, Inc. had his mind set on a particular design for the bridge," stated Kyle Batdorf, Assistant Project Manager with NV2A-Haskell JV. "The aesthetics of the truss bridge was the closest to the design intent."

Continuous coordination between Contech, NV2A-Haskell JV, and LPR, the erector, kept the project on track. Weekly conference calls were held to discuss the bridge's layout and as-built dimensions, modifications to existing structures to accept the bridge, modifications to bridge connections to accommodate certain details of existing buildings, and modifications to the bridge to add erection aids. Upon installation, the bridge fit like a glove in between the two existing structures, a precast concrete garage and a steel structure terminal, and only took about thirty minutes to install.
