Technical Description:
Over the past several years, New Hampshire’s Manchester Airport has become the alternative of choice due to the uncertainties of Boston traffic and the growing congestion at Logan Airport. With this growth, the Manchester Airport Authority undertook runway reconstruction and expansion, lengthening its principal runway (17/35) and adding runway safety areas to meet FAA-mandated standards.
The 1,500 foot extension takes Runway 17/35 over a low area drained by Little Cohas Brook, requiring relocation and enclosure of the stream. Cast-in-place footings topped by CON/SPAN® precast arch-box sections provide a total stream enclosure more than 1,500 feet long and support up to 43 feet of fill needed to gain space for the runway development. To accommodate that fill height, the CON/ SPAN® units, more typically used for highway bridge loadings, were thickened and redesigned with increased reinforcement for the heavier loads.
