The trispot darter was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, and for over 50 years, it was believed that the species no longer existed in Alabama. In 2008, however, biologists from the Geological Survey of Alabama (GSA) discovered a specimen in a St. Clair County stream. Since then, efforts have been made to preserve the streams and the species. One stream in particular, a tributary of Little Canoe Creek, is a hotspot for the federally protected fish. Upon further evaluation, it was determined that an existing culvert was impeding fish passage and needed to be replaced.

The culvert was owned by Alabama Power and since they were already implementing forestry best management practices to help conserve and protect the stream and its habitat, the decision was easy. A 25' x 20' Big R Bridge® Rolled Girder was selected as the best replacement for its aesthetic appearance which included a natural looking deck comprised of gravel and timber running planks.

"Removal of the barrier... accomplished two significant habitat needs: the enhancement of upstream access and restoration of natural stream flow patterns," stated Dr. Pat O'Neil, retired Deputy Director of GSA.

In just four days, the new bridge was installed and the natural flow of the stream resumed. Migration of the trispot darters upstream of the bridge was confirmed.

"This bridge restores the stream to a more natural condition and will allow trispot darters to easily move through the area," concluded Chad Fitch, Senior Environmental Affairs Specialist at Alabama Power. "Our partners brought their expertise and passion for conservation to this project and we will continue to play a role in the recovery of the species."
