The western portion of the Laramie Region, Wyoming, which encompasses the Platte Valley, eastern half of the Sierra Madres and the Snowy Range, was the focal point for many habitat projects for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) for several years. As part of those improvements, the Heward Ditch was converted into an enclosed irrigation system to increase water delivery to irrigated hay meadows that provide forage for wintering elk and other wildlife.
Having assessed the project requirements, the WGFD reviewed several options and ultimately selected a DuroMaxx® SRPE with high performance (HP) joint system for the enclosure because it met all the project requirements.
The WGFD Habitat and Access personnel, WGFD surveyor, and WGFD engineers redesigned and converted the Heward Ditch, a 12,700 LF of seeping open canal, into a 42-inch diameter DuroMaxx irrigation system. This pipeline now secures the irrigation capability that will in turn enhance grass hay production on 900 acres that provide forage for over 600 head of wintering elk and other abundant wildlife on the WHMA. Additionally, the DuroMaxx ditch enclosure allows for earlier irrigation use in the spring, rather than waiting for snowdrifts to melt and then implementing costly repairs.
“The pipe is high quality and has served its function, exceeding our expectations. Contech's ability to efficiently deliver the pipe on demand and effectively communicate in a superior fashion was excellent. They have great customer service, and the representatives of Contech have been a pleasure to work with.” Todd Grosskopf, Wyoming Game and Fish.
