Technical Description:

(3) Filterra® Bioretention Systems

The Granite Estates Professional Center was built with two acres of impervious surfaces that required a bioretention solution to comply with the California Statewide NPDES Phase II Small MS4 General Permit.

Conventional bioretention could not be implemented into or close to a required retaining wall. The Filterra Bioretention System using a vault configuration was designed as a load-bearing segment of the retaining wall.

Filterra is similar to bioretention in its function and application, but has been optimized for high volume/flow treatment and high pollutant removal. Its small footprint allows it to be used on highly developed sites such as landscaped areas, parking lots and streetscapes.  At the heart of all Filterra systems is Filterra engineered media; a specified gradation of washed aggregate and organic material homogeneously blended under strict quality controlled conditions.

Engineers selected Filterra over other proprietary systems because of its ability to meet both the intent and requirements of the new statewide regulations and its ability to be designed as a load-bearing segment of a retaining wall. The Filterra Bioretention System also provided the best value in both up-front capital and maintenance, as the first year of maintenance is included with all Filterra installations.
