Technical Description:
An existing multi-cell culvert structure located in Custer County had reached the end of its serviceable life and needed to be replaced. An aluminum box culvert (ALBC) manufactured by Contech Engineered Solutions was determined to be the best fit to replace the aging culvert for a number of reasons. The structure was lightweight and could be assembled offsite and lifted into place. The structure was able to maintain a low profile but also provided a clear span structure, so the county did not have to worry about the maintenance associated with debris blockage. Finally, the ALBC structure was also a very cost-effective solution that could be assembled by the Custer County road and bridge crew.
The ALBC structure came with a full invert foundation, structure, headwalls and wingwalls in aluminum all shipped on one truck, providing additional total installed cost savings.
The county road and bridge crew were able to demolish the existing structure and install the new ALBC in a few weeks allowing for the roadway to be opened with minimal impact to the traffic.
