The Premarc Corporation installed a four-celled CON/SPAN® access bridge from an existing parking lot across a pond within environmentally sensitive wetlands to the Compuware sports arena complex. The new bridge will make access to the main entrance more convenient.

The original plans called for a triple-span 27-in prestressed box-beam structure with added face panels to form an arch-shaped structure. The decision to use CON/SPAN® was threefold: 1) using precast concrete could speed the installation with less environmental disruption; 2) CON/SPAN®’s precast arch shape was aesthetically desirable; and 3) the site conditions, architectural and functional objectives combined to make CON/SPAN® the best solution.

The installation was complex because the arched units were set on pedestal walls, which were placed on pile foundations in water. In addition, the bridge was set on a 4% grade. The architectural design included brick facing to match the material on the front of the complex.
