An at-grade, unlighted, non-signalized railroad crossing needed to be eliminated to provide access for a new riverside development project. To minimize the track closure time on this Norfolk Southern mainline, a very short construction time was mandatory.

The contractor was allotted a 13-day shutdown of the track, but by maintaining an aggressive construction schedule, they were able to open the track four days early. Prior to excavation, the contractor drilled and poured 19 concrete caissons adjacent to the existing track. After shutting down the track, the work area was excavated, precast concrete grade-beams were set atop the caissons and field connected. The 6-foot high grade-beams served as foundation walls for all the CON/SPAN® precast components.

The 12 CON/SPAN® precast arch units, four precast headwalls, and 19 precast wingwall panels were installed in just two work shifts, outperforming the very aggressive construction schedule. All of the CON/SPAN® components were designed in accordance with the structural requirements of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) specifications. The new CON/SPAN® twin underpass provides a safe and aesthetically pleasing gateway to the new commercial and residential development.
