The Maine Department of Transportation recognized that the existing vehicular bridge located on Bridge Street over the Presumpscot River in Westbrook needed to be replaced. Since a safe crossing for pedestrians was necessary as well, it was decided that a separate pedestrian bridge would be constructed adjacent to the new vehicular bridge. In order to maintain traffic flow in the area, the horizontal alignment of the roadway was adjusted so that the new vehicular bridge could be constructed adjacent to the existing bridge.

With the bridges located in the most densely populated commercial and residential area of Westbrook, it was imperative that the replacement options be installed as quickly and efficiently as possible. Since the bridge is located in close proximity to a new Downtown Riverwalk recently built, aesthetics were very important.

During the preliminary solution development phase of the project, Stantec, the project engineer, worked closely with Contech Engineered Solutions.

“Contech was very willing to provide us with design, fabrication, construction, maintenance, and cost information for various multi-use truss types during preliminary design, which we used to facilitate a generic truss selection by the City of Westbrook and presentations to the public," stated Tim Merritt, Senior Project Manager with Stantec. "Contech was selected by the general contractor as the supplier of the truss, and their final design and fabrication drawings were well organized and easy for us to review and approve."

A 103' span x 10' wide Keystone®-style, Continental® Pedestrian Truss with wood decking was selected as the best solution. The Keystone style was selected for its aesthetics and ability to blend well with the newly revitalized area. The galvanized and painted finish, as well as the hardwood Ipe decking, were selected for maximum durability. The bridge was delivered to the site in three sections and spliced together together on site in just one day. The bridge was then lifted via crane and set into place in approximately 15 minutes.

"The fabricated product is of high quality and its aesthetics speak for itself," concluded Merritt. "The bridge has become the focal point of the downtown Westbrook area and will serve as the connection between the City’s south Riverwalk and the future north Riverwalk. The multi-use bridge is an integral part of the project."

The project was completed six months ahead of schedule and received an ACEC of Maine Honor Award in the Special Projects category.
