After three decades of discussion, the Wright State Way bridge was installed over the highly trafficked I-675 providing pedestrians with safe passage over the highway. Previously, Wright State University and Clark State Community College students had to walk along busy North Fairfield Road which is utilized by 34,000 vehicles each day and does not have sidewalks nor pedestrian crossing signals. As the best solution, a 3-span 467' x 12' Capstone® style, Continental® truss structure was selected for the pedestrian crossing. The $3.1 million project connects the cities of Fairborn and Beavercreek and includes access ramps on each end.
"Wright State Way will give our student population greater access to restaurants, shopping and entertainment, while also creating a convenient corridor to and from the Wright State campus for the Beavercreek and Fairborn communities," stated David R. Hopkins, Wright State University President.
In addition to serving students and pedestrians, the structure also provides cyclists with access to the region's extensive bike trail network, such as the Mad River Trail and the Creekside Trail, via the Wright Brothers/Huffman Prairie Trail.
With I-675 being such a busy road, it was imperative that the Continental structure be installed at night to avoid as much disruption as possible to traffic. Overall, the structure was installed in just three evenings meeting the requirements, providing a successful installation and allowing I-675 to reopen on schedule.
"The prefabricated Continental structures for this project were easy to handle, easy to assemble and easy to install in a timely manner because of Contech Engineered Solutions' well thought-out design and connection methods," said Vincent Guzzo, P.E., Vice President of Engineering with Double Z Construction, the contractor on the project.
"Moreover, because of the tight completion date for this project, Contech's process from design to delivery was executed seamlessly allowing us to complete the project on time. We have done many projects with Contech, and they have always performed to our expectations and we look forward to the next project with them."
In August 2015, a ribbon cutting ceremony held at the bridge was attended by more than 300 community members. During the ceremony, Beavercreek Mayor Brian Jarvis commented about the impact the bridge will have on the community. "Beavercreek is looking to the future with alternative modes of transportation that fits the needs of our community, and this will be a big part of our future development."
