Storm Drain

Metropolis Lifestyle Center, LLC

September 2015

The existing stormwater drainage system at the Shops at Perry Crossing in Plainfield, IN was failing rapidly and was leading to unfavorable conditions during storm events. The existing traditional concrete trench drains had cracked, heaved, and been damaged by snow plows and were no longer effectively conveying flow, leading to ponding in the busy mall parking lot. Woolpert was tasked with designing a solution to alleviate the issue. Some of the challenges faced on this project were keeping the existing grade constant and utilizing already in-place manhole structures. In order to match existing grade, positive drainage was not always in the same direction as the road profile. Another concern was the aesthetics and safety of the system, given its location in a highly trafficked pedestrian area.

A Contech Variable Height Slotted Drain™ system proved to be the perfect solution given these parameters. The issue of matching existing grade and maintaining positive drainage direction was accomplished by the ability to change the height of the riser slots along the length of the drain pipe. The use of corrugated metal pipe for the system also proved to be a cost-effective solution when bid against other materials, such as concrete.

Woolpert Design Engineer, John Scheidler, commented, "The benefits of Slotted Drain in this application were minimal disturbance to the existing street, narrow finished profile to better blend in with the surroundings, easy connection to existing storm structures, and the anticipated durability against snow plows.”
