Westchester County in Peekskill, New York, implemented a revitalization plan to refurbish and expand three of the largest senior citizens facilities in the area. Drum Hill, a senior living apartment community located near downtown, was one of the three and began construction on an addition named River Pointe.
Conifer LLC, a full service real estate company, was in need of a stormwater detention system to retain stormwater runoff from the building, parking lot and roadway and worked with Fuller Engineering & Land Surveying on possible options.
Originally, a Reinforced Concrete Pipe (RCP) detention system was specified on the project but DuroMaxx steel reinforced polyethylene pipe was another suggested option. A new addition to Contech’s detention/retention and rainwater harvesting portfolio, DuroMaxx pipe is designed to meet watertight specifications and is available with a wide variety of fittings – providing a great benefit to this project.
DuroMaxx is also a more budget-friendly alternative to RCP. Available in larger diameters (24-in. - 72-in.), it maximizes savings on per gallon storage cost.
DuroMaxx was chosen in 60-in. diameter as the stormwater detention solution for River Pointe. Bulkheads were included with the 240 LF of pipe and were installed below ground to accommodate the site’s limited footprint.
The longer lengths and lighter weighted sections allowed for a quicker installation on the site where access was limited. Because of its light weight, DuroMaxx was easy to handle and was effortlessly transported and assembled on site.
“DuroMaxx was very easy to install and was the perfect material to work with,” said Hector Amaya, project superintendant for Eastern Excavation. “I look forward to using it on future projects.”
Eastern Excavation also utilized an ArmorFlex articulating concrete block system to stabilize a fire access road to be constructed above the detention system. They installed 4,644 sf of ArmorFlex Class 50S block and 6-in. of granular fill and topsoil atop the ArmorFlex.
A $12.5 million project, River Pointe was designed to have 42 fully equipped units and will welcome new residents in early 2010.
