Technical Description:
In late 2006, a 1.2 mile extension was announced to connect the Riverwalk to the Levee Trail. As part of the project, the Louisville Metro Parks chose a Continental ® pedestrian bridge to connect the trails. The 231’ long single span structure is one of the longest clear span structures of its type. The bridge was installed utilizing unique construction methods. Arnold Dugan & Meyers assembled the bridge on the bank, and using a bulldozer, crews then pushed the structure across the ravine on rollers.
Key aspects of this project included ease of installation and a solution to hydraulic concerns, due to the structure’s clear span. The bridge won the “Project of the Year” award granted by the Kentucky chapter of APWA.
The Levee Trail is a 3.6-mile long bike and pedestrian trail running from Riverview Park to the Farnsley-Moremen House. The Riverwalk is a 6.9 mile mixed-use trail in Louisville, Kentucky, running along the Ohio River. The trail has become part of the City of Parks initiative to build a 100-mile greenway around the city.
