Located just beneath North Lagoon Drive in Panama City Beach, Florida, a 20-year-old HDPE corrugated pipe needed replacement. The alignment of the culvert was in a drainage easement located between two private residences. The property owner had noticed sink holes and informed Bay County of the culvert failure. They were hoping to get the outfall pipe replaced quickly in order to prevent further erosion along his properly lines.

Bay County made an assessment of the outfall to determine what solution might best fit the project needs while providing a structural solution that could replace the existing, failed pipe. Even with a collared joint, the original HDPE outfall pipe had failed to prevent fines from infiltrating and sink holes were appearing aboveground along with additional erosion problems. Additionally, the pipe drained from an older subdivision out to a saltwater sound of the Gulf of Mexico, an extremely alkaline environment.

Having recently participated in a Contech Engineered Solutions technical presentation, Bay County was aware of a new pipe option that they had not previously considered – DuroMaxx® steel reinforced polyethylene (SRPE). In order to address these concerns and design for a longer service life, they determined that a 36-inch diameter, DuroMaxx® SRPE outfall pipe would work perfectly, providing both the structural requirements as well as the ability to withstand the aggressive soil conditions.

Excavation and removal of the existing pipe began, and in just one and a half days a Bay County maintenance crew of four men was able to install the 200 LF of 36-inch DuroMaxx® outfall pipe with a small excavator. Not only was the property owner pleased at the quick response and solution to the drainage issues, but the County was very happy with the ease of installation as well as the ability of DuroMaxx® to withstand the harsh, alkaline environments. The new culvert has an estimated service life of 100+ years.
