Walters Creek

Steelhead trout were once abundant in the streams that drain into the Morro Bay Estuary in California. By 1997, their numbers had significantly decreased and they became designated as a federally threatened species. The Walters Creek Riparian Restoration Project is part of a long-term strategy to improve conditions for steelhead in the Morro Bay watershed. A large part of the project entailed removal of failing culverts to restore a more natural stream channel and flood plain.

The California Department of Fish & Game chose to replace one of the culverts with a Continental ^® truss bridge. The clear span structure would not disturb the streambed and could provide better passage for the steelhead trout. This type of bridge would also provide ample clearance during flood events.

“The Continental Bridge is a much better solution for maintaining a healthier creek channel” said Dan Berman, Director of the Morro Bay National Estuary Program. “By spanning the creek, we avoid the erosion problems caused by culverts and the fish don’t have to swim through them”

Walters Creek Riparian Restoration Project creates a link with current and future restoration projects in the Chorro watershed. When all of these projects are completed, approximately 3.5 miles of improved and restored riparian habitat and 45-65 acres of restored floodplain will exist.
