Technical Description:
The Timken Company needed a quick solution to replace a narrow and deficient structure over one of their connecting roads in Stark County. They turned to Hammontree & Associates to design a bridge that could carry Gambrinus Avenue over a road for large vehicles hauling scrap steel from their facility.
The structure was originally designed as a typical steel beam highway bridge, but time constraints led Hammontree to seek out a prefabricated option. Karl Oprisch, bridge engineer for Hammontree & Associates, utilized the DYOB® – Design Your Own Bridge Program to obtain a drawing of a CON/SPAN® bridge for the site.
“Using DYOB allowed me to visualize exactly how the bridge might look,” said Oprisch. “I received the drawing just a few minutes after I had filled out my parameters, and it helped this fast-tracked project get started and completed within our tight timeframe.”
Design and construction of the project occurred in just five months and the bridge and roadway opened a few days ahead of schedule. The new bridge, with a wider opening and straighter alignment, allows the Timken Company to safely utilize this road with the large trucks.
