Stone Mountain Memorial Association (SMMA) completed a planning study to find a solution for the at-grade conflict that occurred between vehicular traffic and pedestrians crossing at the main route circling Stone Mountain Park. The Association turned to Carter & Burgess, who provided multiple options including a CON/SPAN® pedestrian tunnel and a pedestrian overpass structure.

The location and length of a pedestrian overpass bridge option was dictated by the land needed to meet ADA requirements for the path approaches. This would have required a diagonal crossing of the intersection and caused the bridge to have a larger span and higher cost compared to the CON/SPAN pedestrian tunnel.

Development Planning & Engineering (DPE) prepared the construction documents that included the pedestrian tunnel, path approaches, and drainage improvements. SMMA decided on a structure on concrete strip footing with paved invert. After completing the foundation, the pedestrian tunnel was set in a single day.

“The pedestrian tunnel opened on Memorial Day weekend” said Bob Cowhig, Director of Planning and Construction for SMMA. “The improved traffic flow without the constant stopping of cars to allow our park guests to cross a four lane road is one of the best investments SMMA has ever made. The July 4th events had the same positive results. The entire design and installation process proved to be one of the smoothest projects I’ve done in 24 years at Stone Mountain Park”
