The Goddard Drain Well in Orlando, Florida, was located in a high ground water table that caused ground water seepage through the canal bank. The mucky materials on the canal bank would slide, causing bank failure and flow restriction to the well. Orange County decided to regrade and stabilize the canal banks so the new well would perform properly.
Orange County chose to use ArmorFlex Articulating Concrete Block Revetment Systems from Contech on the project. A flexible, interlocking matrix of cellular concrete blocks of uniform size, shape and weight, ArmorFlex seemed a perfect fit for the project.
“I chose the articulated block to stabilize the banks because the open cells would allow ground water to constantly seep without causing damage to the banks,” said Brian Nead with Orange County. “When we install articulated block, we always line the back side with filter fabric so that no soil loosens from the bank when the ground water seeps through. This also helps eliminate the need of underdrain on some projects.”
Due to the success of the project, Orange County set up an annual contract with Contech for stocking and supplying ArmorFlex. They now stock the material in 4-ft. x 8-ft. and 4-ft. x 16-ft. mats at their supply yard for use all over the county. This proves convenient for use on local spillways, canals, boat ramps, driveways and even some unique applications such as sink holes.
ArmorFlex was easily installed using county crews and provided the erosion protection that the county needed.
