A channel restoration effort featuring more than one million square feet of ArmorFlex, an articulated concrete block revetment system, is currently underway at Florida Power & Light (FPL).

Hurricanes in the Jensen Beach area caused severe erosion to 85% of the canal embankment at FPL’s Saint Lucie Nuclear Power Plant. ArmorFlex was selected to repair the channel because it could provide a permanent, easy-to-install and cost-effective erosion system. The project marks the largest ArmorFlex project in Contech history.

ArmorFlex is a flexible, interlocking matrix of machine-compressed, cellular concrete blocks of uniform size, shape and weight. The matrix is connected by a series of cables, which pass longitudinally through performed ducts in each block. ArmorFlex revetment systems combine porosity, flexibility, vegetation encouragement and habitat enhancement with a rigid lining’s non-erodible self-weight and high-tractive force.

Elements of the repair include installation while the units are operating and restoration of embankments that are 2/3 underwater. After repairing the embankments and placing a drainage layer (57 stone), divers from UESI will place a filter fabric and the ArmorFlex articulated concrete block mats. The project began in January, and over 1.2 million SF of mats will be placed over the next two years.
