Technical Description:
This high profile pedestrian overpass, now known as the Dale Earnhardt Memorial Bridge, is a single span Continental® pedestrian truss bridge, with a 209-foot long span and 20 feet in width.
The entire bridge was built at Contech Fort Payne, Alabama plant and transported in pieces to the job site. The bridge leaps over International Speedway Boulevard, Daytona’s busiest street. It carries tens of thousands of spectators from parking areas and drop-off points to the massive Daytona International Speedway.
“This was a smooth and easy operation due to the fact that it was prefabricated,” said Bob Barnard, manager of project development at Haskell. “It basically arrived in two halves and was put up overnight.”
The Dale Earnhardt Memorial Bridge also includes plaques honoring Earnhardt at both ends of the bridge. Earnhardt—a seven-time Winston Cup champion—was killed in a crash at the Daytona 500 race in 2001. The bridge, along with a statue of Earnhardt, was unveiled in February 2002.
