After a large storm event washed out a two cell box culvert downstream of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) control-release spillway, a replacement bridge was needed. Located at the historic Beavers Bend State Park in Beavers Bend, Oklahoma, a popular area for fishing and hiking, the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Board thought it was imperative the bridge was rebuilt and open to traffic as soon as possible.
Contech Engineered Solutions worked closely with the consulting engineer, Cyntergy Architecture + Engineering + Construction out of Tulsa, to design a structure that could carry high storm events, while also being aesthetically pleasing and cost-effective. After reviewing several different options, a 84' x 18’-4 1/4” CON/SPAN® O-Series® Twin-Leaf Bridge System, 36' in length, was selected as the best solution for its ability to meet those demands. In order to further enhance the appearance of the structure, an ashlar formliner finish was utilized on the headwalls and wingwalls because it mimicked the area’s natural rock outcropping.
Due to the bridge’s tall headwall and wingwall
configuration, a combination of precast and cast-in-place walls were utilized
to meet the structural design requirements. The formliner was provided by
Contech to the contractor for use on the field-cast walls in order to ensure
matching aesthetics. Since the concrete coloration was different
between the precast and the cast-in-place walls, cementitious rub was applied to the end treatments after installation.
The low-bid contractor, T. McDonald Construction, Inc. out of Eufaula, was a first-time installer of Contech's precast arches. As with all of our project partners, Contech worked closely with them throughout the entire process to ensure a smooth installation. The overall result was a beautiful iconic bridge that fits perfectly in the park.
“It is a great looking project, and we were glad to work with Contech on it,” concluded Ed Vestal, Senior Specialist/Construction Services of Cyntergy.
