Technical Description:
Cornerstone Development Group needed a structure to span a creek and support a main roadway in the residential development of Spring Creek Hollows. Several options were considered, including a precast concrete, truss and structural plate bridge.
The decisive factor became the structure’s capacity to support a large amount of fill in a cost effective manner. A SUPER-SPAN metal plate structure was the final choice based on the site conditions. Engineers could design such a structure with a 25-5” rise, reducing the amount of fill above.
With a 39’-2” span, the structure serves as a wildlife underpass, reducing the number of animals crossing the road that could potentially cause traffic accidents. The SUPER-SPAN structure’s clear span and high rise helps to encourage animals to pass beneath the roadway.
The SUPER-SPAN was also designed with Keystone® modular block wingwalls. Over 8,000 square feet of Keystone Standard Units and Caps was specified to provide the required aesthetics on the structure. Plate Erectors installed the 99’ long structure in only five days.
