Technical Description:
When Sacred Heart Church moved to their new and more expansive facilities in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, a very basic landscaping was completed around the building. When the funding became available, parish officials contacted Scenic Specialties Landscaping Co. to create a custom landscape plan that would make the large campus more attractive and useful.
“This was the first time we had done a bridge project like this” says Randy Schmitz, owner of Scenic Specialties. “We were originally considering a wood bridge to span the pond, but were not pleased with the look, and the maintenance of a wood bridge was also an issue”
After researching their options, Schmitz contacted Contech for a Continental ® pedestrian truss bridge. Working closely with Contech, Scenic Specialties was able to make design choices by reviewing photographs of other bridge projects. Once finding the look they liked, a 40’ long by 6’ wide bridge was designed to fit their needs. To complement the church’s architecture, the bridge was painted white with rust-red accents on the custom railing. Ipe wood was installed on the bridge deck to help keep maintenance to a minimum.
“The parish is very pleased with the project and so are we” says Schmitz. “The new bridge is a wonderful focal point for everyone to enjoy. It can be seen from the highway, from inside the church and the parking lot”
