Meijer Foods purchased the Memorial Mall Shopping Center in 2015 with the intent to demolish a section of the mall and establish a new anchor for the shopping center. Construction of the new 150,000 square foot store began in 2017 and includes a gas station, drive-up pharmacy, and a garden center.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources calls for 40% TSS removal on redevelopment sites. With limited land space an above ground pond was not an option, so engineers from Greenberg Farrow worked with Contech to design two underground wet ponds made from corrugated steel pipe. The corrugated steel pipe was the preferred solution due to the cost efficiencies, design flexibility, and ease of installation.

Two separate systems were needed due to the size of the site. The underground wet ponds provide water quality and quantity control in one structure, treating and controlling the water quality volume within the required drain down time.

The East system is made from 810 LF of 96” Aluminized Steel Type 2 to providing 32,170 CF of storage. The West system is made from 340 LF of 96” Aluminized Steel Type 2 to providing 17,242 CF of storage.

The construction schedule was aggressive due to the store opening deadline. The two systems were delivered on time and installed in less than 2 weeks.
