Technical Description:
After ten years of planning the runway extension at the Lewis A. Jackson Airport, 498 feet of CON/SPAN® bridge units were installed in just three days to complete the runway overpass. The CON/SPAN® option was chosen over several proposals, including a proposal to close South Valley Road to accommodate the extension. According to Tim Spencer, President of the Greene County Airport Authority Board, “The tunnel was favored by the Airport Authority as well as local government entities.”
The finished project consists of a CON/SPAN® tunnel, which carries South Valley Road under the runway extension. The CON/SPAN® bridge units and precast headwalls were installed on top of a pedestal wall foundation to gain the required clearance.
