A CON/SPAN structure was selected as a stream crossing at a new housing sub-division in La Vigne located in the California wine country of Napa County. This wetlands area, home to the California red-legged frog, required permits from four organizations including the California Fish & Game, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and California Regional Water Quality Control Board.
The California red-legged frog has been protected as a threatened species by the Endangered Species Act since June 1996. It once lived across much of California, including portions of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, where it is believed to be the title character of Mark Twain’s famed short story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” In 1865, when the story was written, red-legged frogs were the largest frogs in the state.
