After a structure on I-94 in Hysham, Montana was deemed insufficient due to deflection of the shape and corrosion at the haunch's seam, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) worked with Contech Engineered Solutions during the design process to identify feasible options to reline the existing structure. The competitive bidding process demonstrated Contech’s solution was the most economical.
In the end, the best solution was a 11'-4" x 10'-3" MULTI-PLATE® Underpass Shape, 162' in length. The structure was constructed on site in 10-20' long sections and then sliplined through the existing structure. The repair was completed in just 2.5 weeks.
"Being our crew's first MULTI-PLATE installation, we spent a lot of time planning and the pre-construction meeting with Contech really helped streamline the process," stated David Drga, Project Engineer with Century Companies. "Once we started bolting it together, we adapted our plan a little, and it went really well."
The reline option was selected for its ability to eliminate closure of I-94, reduce costs and allow passage of both machinery and animals through the structure. The project was deemed a resounding success, and in 2020, it won the Project of the Year award from the National Corrugated Steel Pipe Association (NCSPA).

a new structure.”
