Technical Description:
This pedestrian concourse in Virginia connects commuters to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority System, the second largest rail transit system and fifth largest bus network in the U.S. The tunnel was created to allow pedestrian traffic to travel from the new Patent Trademark Office to the metro station without having to cross at grade with Duke Street, a major commuter route into Alexandria.
Being an open cut situation, the CON/SPAN® solution met several areas of concern, including speed of installation, segmental construction for traffic maintenance and the final appearance of the units. The vertical sidewalls of the CON/SPAN® shape were a significant advantage in meeting clearance requirements.
