The City of Cumming and the Forsyth County Commission worked together to build a new aquatic center. The main challenge of the project occurred during pre-construction on the site when an unknown intermittent stream was discovered. Due to the location of the stream, the topography of the site, the cost of retaining walls and the available area required for the Aquatic Center itself, it looked like the project would need to be moved to another site. The Corps of Engineers would only allow up to 300’ of the stream to be piped while maintaining channel alignment and a stream buffer variance permit needed to be obtained from the State Environmental Protection Division. The permit was granted and a structure was needed to provide a stream buffer and stream remediation. A 14-ft. x 7-ft. 3-in. MULTI-PLATE® structure, 234-ft. in length, was chosen for its ability to meet geometric requirements as well as accomodating the immediate construction schedule.
“In the end, it was agreed upon by all parties involved to use the MULTI-PLATE arch structure,” stated Mr. David Anderson, P.E., Vice President of McWhorter & Anderson. “The MULTI-PLATE was chosen not only because of its cost and space savings, but it also helped improve the aesthetics of the site as well as the safety of the patrons. The latter was especially important to the client. As a bonus, the Corps of Engineers was happy since the stream would continue to flow as before.”
A variety of Contech products were used to handle the site’s hydraulic requirements. In addition to the MULTIPLATE, over 800’ of 12’ diameter Aluminized Type II Corrugated Metal Pipe (CMP) was utilized for detention purposes. Three separate VortSentry® HS 96 water quality structures were used as well. Their small footprints provide an effective treatment option for projects where space is at a premium and effective removal of floating and sinking pollutants is critical.
“All of the products were installed without any fabrication problems,” said Danny Bennett, P.E., Project Manager with Reid & Reid Contractors, Inc. “All project completion time requirements were also met or exceeded.”
