Technical Description:

(2) Modular Wetlands Linear Bioretention  Systems

A 390-foot bridge and facility known as the “Cross Border Xpress” connects California’s Otay Mesa to Mexico’s Tijuana International Airport. The structural scheme allows passengers originating and destined to the United States direct access to the Tijuana airport and gives Mexican and international carriers operating from the Tijuana airport direct access to the U.S. passenger market. The Cross Border Xpress offers typical airport amenities such as restaurants, duty-free retail, and short- and long-term parking.

The U.S. side of the project was initially designed and built for an industrial-business park, including storm drains and sewage utilities. Civil engineering firm Latitude 33 was tasked with designing a stormwater management system that would use the existing utilities, meet water quality goals, and maximize land space dedicated to parking facilities. Pollutants of concern included trash, sediment, nutrients, and hydrocarbons.

Engineers specified the Modular Wetlands Linear (MWL) bioretention system to meet the water quality goals. The system can be successfully designed in a range of sizes without sacrificing performance. This proved to be a key feature for a site with existing utilities and various pre-existing storm drain depths

Two MWLs were specified and installed, and after years of operation, these systems have provided superior water quality, addressing the stormwater’s most concerning pollutants.
