Technical Description:
The CON/SPAN® Precast Bridge System was selected as an alternate for the enclosure of Cousins Canal on the west bank of Jefferson Parish. The project included a linear roadway over a structure of approximately 700 feet in length.
The CON/SPAN units tied into Southeast Louisiana projects on both the upstream and downstream ends. The consulting engineer, Jefferson Parish Department of Public Works, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers participated in selecting and sizing the hydraulically efficient CON/ SPAN structure designed for the canal.
The project owner benefited from a hydraulic efficiency that allowed for significant cost savings. The contractor was able to shorten the installation time by six weeks, compared to conventional cast-in-place box culverts. Ultimately, the CON/SPAN structure provided several advantages, including hydraulic efficiency, cost effectiveness and speed of construction.
