The Corona Landfill, located adjacent to the I-15 corridor in Corona, California, needed improvements. In particular, a project at the Southeast Drainage Channel, located adjacent to an inactive landfill, was initiated to repair and improve landfill slope stability and increase hydraulic channel capacity.

In order to control erosion, the best solution was to install 60,421 square feet of ArmorFlex® Class 50 Standard Block Open Cell Mats and 64,206 square feet of ArmorFlex® Class 70 Large Block Open Cell Mats. ArmorFlex provides long term erosion stabilization with minimal maintenance.

Furthermore, Riverside County recognized the importance of ASTM standards 7276 and 7277 in relation to Articulating Concrete Block (ACB) design. Since other ACB brands on the market did not meet those specifications, ArmorFlex was utilized as the best option over more expensive riprap. Additionally, ArmorFlex was selected over concrete lining, grouted riprap, and large cobble due to its ability for natural vegetation growth, creating an aesthetic and natural landscape.

The main challenge during this project was its location along one of the busiest freeways in southern California. In order to guarantee on-time delivery of the ArmorFlex to the site, Contech Engineered Solutions worked with a local trucking company to find a solution. The ArmorFlex was pre-loaded onto trucks the afternoon before delivery so the drivers could get a head start very early the next morning in order to avoid traffic. Once the product was delivered to the site, installation by Sunquest General Engineering, Inc. commenced.

We have installed more than ten ArmorFlex projects over the years," stated Ron Bender, Sunquest President. "We feel that ArmorFlex is a great product and we look forward to working with Contech on future projects."

The project was jointly funded by Riverside County Department of Waste Resources and Riverside County Flood Control, with installation completed in just one week.
