The 5th Street Station has set a new standard when it comes to green building, walkability and sustainability. The 87-acre 5th Street Station site, built to be environmentally friendly, is notable for its extensive, 41-acre open space that was reforested and preserved with more than 5,000 planted trees.

The work included more than just green building practices; it involved working with local leaders to improve water quality in nearby Moore’s Creek, which contributes greatly to the region’s water supply.

The creek restoration was part of a multipronged effort to improve the environment around 5th Street Station, a 470,000-square-foot shopping district. The retail center features high-profile retailers like Wegmans, Field & Stream, and Dicks Sporting Goods, among many others. Environmental efforts at the site also include treating stormwater runoff along 12 acres of Interstate 64. 

Engineers at Bohler Engineering worked with Contech to design a stormwater management system that utilized a number of different techniques on the 87-acre site that included rainwater harvesting, bioretention, and traditional underground detention.

Runoff from the roof of the retail buildings is collected in a 50,000-gallon DuroMaxx Steel Reinforced Polyethylene (SRPE) cistern where it is stored and used for irrigation of landscape islands. 

Fifty five Filterra bioretention systems of various sizes and configurations were used to treat runoff from various portions of the site. Filterra is similar to bioretention in its function and application but has been optimized for high volume/flow treatment and high pollutant removal. Filterra’s small footprint allows it to be used on highly developed sites such as 5’th Street Station. 

Also used on the site was a series of underground detention systems made from Aluminized Steel Type 2. These systems used 96”, 120” and 144” diameter pipe that was manufactured on site using Contech’s MOBILE PIPE® mill, a mobile production vehicle that provides fast and cost-effective on-site steel pipe manufacturing. Manufacturing the pipe on site eliminated shipping costs and allowed for fast installation. The size and shape of the detentions systems varied greatly. Some of the smaller systems consisted of one barrel solid wall systems providing 2,463 CF of storage, while the largest was a perforated six-barrel system that provided 166,623 CF of storage. 

Contech’s large stormwater portfolio, engineering expertise, and unique manufacturing capabilities provided tremendous value to the engineer and owner of the site.
