Technical Description:
Barron County chose an Aluminum Box Culvert to replace an existing culvert that was not hydraulically efficient for the current water flow. The structure also gave the county the ability to get a DNR permit more quickly due to the economical aluminum headwalls and wingwalls being used to support the shoulder and maintain the natural orientation of the stream.
Since the structure was installed at a 15 degree skew, the headwalls and wingwalls were custom fabricated to match the center line of the road. The Barron County crew assembled the structure at an adjacent gravel pit and then used a standard excavator to lift and walk the Aluminum Box Culvert to the excavated site. This gave them the ability to decrease the road closure time and eliminated the need for a costly crane generally used for these types of bridge replacements.
