Sandow Mine

For the Sandow Mine in Rockdale, Texas, Alcoa Inc. wanted to use an erosion control system that could handle the high flows associated with long drop structures but also had the benefits of a “green” look. ArmorFlex tapered 4.75-in. thick articulated concrete blocks were installed in mats in less time than riprap or concrete slope paving and gave the mine the “green” reclamation they desired.

Rockdale Operations, a subsidiary of Alcoa, manufactures 40,000-pound sheet ingot used by fabricating plants to form plates, sheets and foils that can be sold for remelting. Rockdale Operations is the sole supplier of aluminum powder to the NASA Space Shuttle program.
